Understanding the materiality and production methods

In Understorey, Fiona Hall designed the the flower like object by using glass beads. The artwork was emphasized by the use of dynamic colors such as vibrant salmon pink, lively orange, deep blood red and the acidic greens of tropical camouflage. The different layers of leafs shows a sense of embracing.




In Rosalie Gascoigne's Full Stretch, she used plywood as the material, and she design the art work by putting a range of different retro-reflective road signs onto the plywood. It actually looks like she cut the pieces out off the plywood. Also the surface color looks faded.

A.

This is one of the presentation drawings which I did in Interior Architecture last year. We were aimed to design a terrace house for the Executive Director of the Royal Botanic Garden. My concept for the design was the corrosion of rocks. Natural space created by the corrosion of rocks have direction, boundaries, and also forms inward and outward spaces. My design is about the abstraction of rocks, so that I created the roof with different angles. To allow larger space, I managed to create a void in the living room, also the kitchen ceiling was raised. Since it is a terrace house, therefore it lacks natural light. The design attempts to resolve this problem by inserting a courtyard on the ground floor, which divides the long building in two.

Design by Tadao Ando, built in 1989, in the city of Ibaraki, Osaka. Church of the Light demonstrates a great piece of architecture. The building was made of a combination of simple materials consisting of glass, steel and concrete. The most striking feature is a cruciform window cut into the wall, the natural light enters from the wall casts an image of a religious cross. The emptiness of the chapel space is defined by light and the strong contrast between light and solid.


C.

This is an original photo taken in the Sydney Royal Botanic Gardens. I find it interesting that the natural environment has a structure and embodies meanings that can be seen as spaces in the same way as buildings. In this particular photo, the trees form a beautiful canopy rhythm which divide the space into two: the hill side can be seen as the close space, on the other hand, the water side is the open space. This space is also characterized by an interplay of light, form and materials.
