Design Concept
Above ground studio - "Shifting"
Client: Rosalie Gascoigne
The starting point for the upper level studio is linked with the idea of shifting. I managed to design a studio space that allows the client or the visitors to journey or transfer from one place to another, to enjoy the process of changing position, direction and form. I decided to emphasize on the experience of journey that I lift the studio up in the air. The set of stairs connect the studio and gallery space were designed with the purpose of shifting thus thin Steel platform and cables were applied in order to make the journey "shifting" and "swinging".
Furthermore, the studio was designed to incorporate daylighting and natural ventilation to all spaces.
Underground studio - "Embracing"
Client: Fiona Hall
Underground studio was aimed to pursue the idea of embracing, both in the physical form and experience. I managed to design a studio space with a sense of enclosure as an expression of affection, a studio provides a calm and inspiring place to work. The underground studio was designed with angled and sharp edge ceiling that almost reach the ground. Structurally, the ceiling was held by several stainless steel columns, those columns withstand the high pressures, at the same time it gives an impression that the ceiling was about to collapse. The staircase link the underground studio to the gallery space was similar to the idea of "tunnel", that provides a sense of closeness.

3 Animations - Experiment One: DATUM
Animation 1: In animation 1, the animated section cuts through the entire project showing the construction of both staircases and how the buildings integrated within the landscape.
Animation 2: Animation 2 shows the design concept for the above ground studio - "Shifting". The staircase was held up by a number of cables, as you walk up to the studio, the stairs start swinging and moving along thus gives the feeling of "shifting".
Animation 3: This short video demonstrates the basic structure and a range of interior elements of the underground studio (Embracing) when cut by the animated section.
